Abstract

Central banks have enjoyed an important place in economic thought since their inception until now, and their importance has increased with the expansion of their role over time, as well as with the development of economic activity, and the expansion of the financial needs of governments. After economic thought was concerned with defining central banks, defining their roles and characteristics, and setting frameworks for these roles and criteria for their effectiveness, in the beginning, recent years have witnessed an escalation in the debate among economic thinkers in this regard. Especially since the outbreak of the global financial crisis in 2008, where the roles of governments overlapped with the roles of these banks in setting monetary policy, which put the independence of these banks at stake.
