Abstract

Temperatures in the Arctic continue to rise three times the global annual average, driving many of the changes underway in the Arctic, and most importantly that ice is melting at an increasing rate, this affects both local ecosystems and the global climate system, and contributes to rising sea levels, with global environmental, economic and social impacts. While the effects of climate change appear in the Arctic, their causes are often linked to activities outside the region, and this underscores the importance of raising awareness of climate change in the Arctic at the global level, and integrating Arctic issues into global frameworks and agreements, as understanding how climate change affects the Arctic climate system and ecosystems is key to adapting livelihoods and to inform decision-making at the regional, national and international levels.
